Leapfrog From Disaster

Organized and led by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA)-USA and Leapfrog Project including the American Institute of Architects’ AIA NY Design for Risk and Reconstruction (DfRR) and AIA International,  Leapfrog From Disaster will be held in the Philippines on November 1 – 7, 2014 to bring together world-leading pioneers in Resilience, Architecture, and Ecology.

More people are now living in natural disaster-prone areas resulting from climate change. In 2013, there were 22 million people displaced by natural disasters, as reported and backed by the UN in the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC) Global Estimates. “The Philippines experienced the most displacement… with Super Typhoon Haiyan, which was among the strongest such storms ever recorded, displacing 4.1 million people alone — one million more than Africa, the Americas, Europe and Oceania combined. (via Mashable)” In recent years, studies by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) indicate more than 700 recorded natural disasters globally, affecting more than 450 million people worldwide.

Coinciding with the one-year anniversary of Typhoon Haiyan, Leapfrog From Disaster is a truly radical symposium that will both generate and seed distinctive new built environment solutions to the challenge of natural hazards.

Leapfrog From Disaster will explore new theories for both urban and rural development that may accelerate resilience by moving away from out-dated practices and technologies, to more efficient, more equitable and more sustainable solutions.

Speakers and delegates alike will be challenged to re-invent the post-disaster paradigm, going beyond current aspirations and expectations in post-disaster rehabilitation.

Objectives

• Organize a genuinely collaborative post-disaster rebuilding initiative that utilizes wide-ranging local, national and international expertise, efforts, and resources to help Tacloban and its neighboring cities rebuild with resilience.
• Engage different schools of thought from design, science, technology and business, through interdisciplinary discourse and group activities both during and after the symposium.
• Birth a new school of architecture-and-design-thinking from the typhoon rebuilding efforts, which may inform future natural hazard resilience programs worldwide.
• Develop ecologically-friendly architectural solutions that help protect the rich biodiversity of the region and beyond.

PIEP National Convention 2014: Looking Forward: Beyond The Yolanda Experience.

Greetings! It is an honor and a pleasure to invite you as PIEP member to the 23rd PIEP National Convention which will be held on November 6 - 7, 2014, 8am – 5pm at the SGV Conference Hall, 3/F AIM Conference Center, Benavidez cor. Trasierra Streets, Legaspi Village, Makati City.  This coincides with the celebration of World Town Planning Day. The overall theme for the convention is Looking Forward:  Beyond The Yolanda Experience.


When Yolanda struck on November 8, 2013, PIEP was holding its 2013 National Convention with the theme: “Disaster Preparedness and Sustainable Development”.  One year after such episode we are again holding a national convention, this time to discuss how we can participate in implementing the Yolanda Master Redevelopment Plan.  We can review the events from November 8, 2013 to November 2014 but more importantly we can participate and help implement the Yolanda Master Redevelopment Plan by deliberating on the selected policies, programs, plans and best practices and by assembling an innovative action plan for sustainable and resilient communities amongst the Yolanda affected areas.  Hopefully these would serve as a guide to these who wish to participate more actively in the rehabilitation and rebuilding process, now and for other similar occurrences.
Please be informed that the early registration fee is only Three Thousand Pesos (Php 3,000.00) for PIEP members and government employees and Three Thousand Five Hundred Pesos (Php 3,500.00) for non-PIEP members who will remit their payments not later than October 31, 2014.  On-site registration fee shall be Three Thousand Five Hundred Pesos (Php 3,500.00) for PIEP members and government employees and Four Thousand Pesos (Php 4,000.00) for non-PIEP members.  Payments may be made in cash or check payable to PIEP.

Seminar-Workshop on Teaming-up among Barangays for Tourism Rebuilding and Disaster Risk Preparedness

The Philippine Institute of Environmental Planners (PIEP), in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA), invites you to a Seminar-Workshop at the Bohol Tropics Resort, Tagbilaran City, on 23 – 24 October 2014.  The theme of the Seminar-Workshop is TEAMING-UP AMONG BARANGAYS FOR TOURISM REBUILDING AND DISASTER RISK PREPAREDNESS.  It aims to initiate cooperation among the barangays of Bohol, as a method of rebuilding its tourism sector and attaining sustainability after the 2013 earthquake.
